Obama’s Preteen Draft

As posted at change.gov

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year and by developing a plan so that all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

Let that sink in for a second. Obama wants middle school students to perform a mandatory 50 hours of community service a year. That is this || close to being a draft. Community service is a laudable thing and indeed we could be a lot better off if more people did something for their communities rather than sit on their asses and complain, but this is a beginning to Starship Trooper society where ‘service guarantees citizenship.’ Remember that people needed a license to reproduce in that society as well. Is this an unthinkable thing given the environmentally leftist attitudes towards reducing the world’s population? In several reported on instances, scientists stood before standing ovations to proclaiming that the world needs an 85% reduction in people, and that a global pandemic of deadly viruses would be a good thing.

Interesting that this is the first (and only as of this writing) actual position stance or plan posted on Obama’s transition website. I for one think this is damn scary.
